According to a UN Environment Program Global Status Report, within the next four decades, around 2.5 trillion square feet of new construction will be required worldwide.  Due to population growth and increasingly dense urban areas, a solution is needed if – as an international community – we want to reach our climate objectives. According to retired architect and tree lover Moshe Victor Keinig said:

“At first glance it does seem a bit odd that you would have to cut down trees to reach an environmental goal.  But there again who would have known that we would be building at such great levels either.  This seems like a good solution.”

Some places around the world have already begun implementing wood buildings.  Various developers and architectural forms are finding it an increasingly attractive option.  One example is the Swatch Group in Switzerland which has just built three structures that are so far some of the largest timber construction projects worldwide designed by Shigeru Ban.

Plus, wood buildings are much more likely to create affordable housing for the increasing amount of people who need it.
